Mission & Philosophy
Nurturing independent, confident, and lifelong learners through Forest Grove Montessori School.
Our mission is to create a happy and nurturing environment for children between the ages of 18 months to 6 years old at our North York preschool, which is conducive to the development of their social, intellectual, academic, physical and artistic skills through the use of the Montessori Method.
The Purpose of Montessori
The Montessori method of early childhood education is based on cultivating each child's natural desire to learn and experiencing the excitement of learning by his/her own choice using Montessori materials. Through a program of individualized daily learning, children acquire the basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic in the same natural way as they learn to walk and talk.
The materials that the children use and the activities that they engage in, help them develop concentration, co-ordination, and work habits as necessary tools for more advanced learning and development at later stages of their lives.
Educational Pillars
Refining the foundational skills that define early childhood development.
Dr. Maria Montessori
Founder & Visionary
Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was an Italian physician and educator whose revolutionary scientific observations of children's learning processes led to the development of the Montessori Method. Her belief that education should support the natural development of the human being remains the cornerstone of our school's ethos.
Practical Life
Developing coordination, concentration, and independence through everyday tasks that build self-reliance.
Sensorial
Refining the senses and exploring the physical world through tactile experiences and order.
Mathematics
Moving from concrete concepts to abstract mathematical thinking with precision-engineered materials.
Language
Building rich vocabulary and the foundations for reading and writing through phonetic awareness.

The Three-Year Cycle
It is important to note that children could only benefit fully from the Montessori program if they are allowed to follow through the "three year cycle". The time and effort spent in learning various subjects during the first two years come together and into fruition in the third year.
Inception
The child enters as a novice, observing older peers and absorbing the routines and possibilities of the environment.
Integration
The second year brings deep practice. The child becomes a steady worker, refining skills and building confidence.
Leadership
The final "Cap-stone" year where mastery is achieved. The child becomes a mentor, teaching younger students and solidifying their own knowledge.
